Example 1: Glucose (C6H12O6)

  1. Identify atomic masses: C = 12.011, H = 1.008, O = 15.999 g/mol.
  2. Multiply by subscripts: 6×C + 12×H + 6×O.
  3. Compute: (6×12.011) + (12×1.008) + (6×15.999) = 72.066 + 12.096 + 95.994 = 180.156 g/mol.

Example 2: Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2)

  1. Atomic masses: Ca = 40.078, O = 15.999, H = 1.008 g/mol.
  2. Expand parentheses: Ca + 2×(O + H).
  3. Compute: 40.078 + 2×(15.999 + 1.008) = 40.078 + 2×17.007 = 74.092 g/mol (≈74.093 g/mol).

Example 3: Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O)

  1. Split hydrate: CuSO4 and 5×H2O.
  2. M(CuSO4) = Cu(63.546) + S(32.06) + 4×O(15.999) = 63.546 + 32.06 + 63.996 = 159.602 g/mol.
  3. M(5×H2O) = 5×[2×H(1.008) + O(15.999)] = 5×18.015 = 90.075 g/mol.
  4. Total = 159.602 + 90.075 = 249.677 g/mol.
