⚠️ Safety
- Chromatography solvents (ethanol, propanone, petroleum ether) are volatile and highly flammable — keep away from naked flames and heat sources.
- Develop the plate in a covered tank in a fume cupboard — the vapours are harmful to inhale and must not be allowed to build up.
- Handle the paper/plate by the edges (forceps) — skin oils and touching the origin spoil the separation.
- Many dyes and locating agents are irritant and staining — wear gloves and goggles and wash off any splashes.
- Pour spent solvent and dye waste into the labelled organic-waste container, never down the sink.
