Neutralization Reaction

Acid + Base → Salt + Water

In this experiment we prepare sodium chloride (NaCl) by reacting dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) with sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l)

Steps

  1. Take NaOH solution in a beaker.
  2. Add a few drops of phenolphthalein indicator — solution turns pink.
  3. Slowly add HCl from a burette while stirring.
  4. When pink color disappears → neutralization complete.
  5. Evaporate the solution to obtain NaCl crystals.

🎯 Objective

Prepare sodium chloride (common salt) by neutralizing dilute HCl with dilute NaOH.

Procedure

Take 20 mL NaOH solution in a beaker.

Add phenolphthalein indicator (turns pink).

Slowly add HCl from burette while stirring.

Pink color disappears → neutralization complete.

Evaporate to obtain NaCl crystals.
