Crystallization Process

  • What is Crystallization?A technique to obtain pure solid crystals from an impure solution by slow, controlled cooling of a hot saturated solution.
  • Saturated SolutionA solution that has dissolved the maximum amount of solute at a given temperature. Adding more solute will not dissolve.

Steps

  1. Dissolve impure CuSO₄ in hot water to make a saturated solution.
  2. Filter the hot solution to remove insoluble impurities.
  3. Allow the filtrate to cool slowly and undisturbed.
  4. Pure blue crystals of CuSO₄·5H₂O will form.
  5. Decant excess liquid and dry the crystals on filter paper.
Did you know? Slow cooling gives large, well-formed crystals while rapid cooling gives small, irregular ones!

🎯 Objective

To obtain pure crystals of copper sulphate (CuSO₄·5H₂O) from its impure solution by crystallization.

Procedure
1

Dissolve impure CuSO₄ in minimum hot water.

Filter the hot saturated solution.

Allow the filtrate to cool slowly in a beaker.

Observe blue crystals forming at the bottom.

Decant solution and dry crystals on filter paper.
