Bromine Water Test: Br₂ (aq) adds across C=C → orange color disappears
Baeyer's Test: Dilute KMnO₄ oxidizes C=C → purple decolorizes → brown MnO₂

Saturated compounds (alkanes) do NOT decolorize either reagent. Unsaturated compounds (alkenes, alkynes) give positive tests.

⚠️ Safety

  • Bromine water is toxic and corrosive — its vapour irritates eyes/lungs; use in a fume cupboard and never pipette by mouth.
  • Dilute KMnO₄ is a strong oxidiser that stains skin and clothing brown; handle with care.
  • Organic samples (cyclohexene, cyclohexane) are volatile and highly flammable — keep away from flames/sparks.
  • Ethylene is a flammable gas; bubble it in only in a well-ventilated area, no naked flame.
  • Wear goggles and gloves; collect halogen/organic waste separately for disposal.
