Lassaigne's Principle

Organic compounds are fused with sodium metal to convert covalently bonded elements to ionic form:

Na + C + N → NaCN
2Na + S → Na₂S
Na + X → NaX (X = Cl, Br, I)

Tests on SFE

Nitrogen: SFE + FeSO₄ + NaOH → heat → add H₂SO₄ → Prussian Blue
Sulphur: SFE + Na₂[Fe(CN)₅NO] → Purple/Violet color
Halogens: SFE + HNO₃ → boil → add AgNO₃ → White/Pale yellow/Yellow ppt
