🎯 Aim

To study shifts in chemical equilibrium for Fe³⁺/SCN⁻ and Co²⁺/Cl⁻ systems by changing reactant concentrations.

Le Chatelier’s Principle

"If a system at equilibrium is disturbed, it shifts to counteract the change."

System A: Iron Thiocyanate

Fe³⁺(aq) + SCN⁻(aq) ⇌ FeSCN²⁺(aq)
  • Fe³⁺: Pale Yellow
  • FeSCN²⁺: Blood Red
  • Fe³⁺ and SCN⁻ are the reactants; FeSCN²⁺ is the product
  • Predict the shift before adding — use the gate →
⚠️ Safety
  • KSCN (thiocyanate) is toxic — never mix with strong acid (can release toxic gas); no mouth contact, wash hands.
  • Cobalt salts are toxic and a suspected carcinogen — avoid skin contact and inhaling any dust.
  • Concentrated HCl gives corrosive, choking fumes — add it in a fume cupboard and point the tube away from your face.
  • FeCl₃ solution is acidic and staining — protect eyes and clothing; wear goggles.
  • Collect iron- and cobalt-containing solutions as heavy-metal waste; do not pour down the sink.
