Types of Chemical Reactions

Key Observations

  • Combination: Heat release, steam evolution (exothermic)
  • Decomposition: Color change (green→brown), pungent gas smell
  • Displacement: Solution color fades (blue→green), metal deposits
  • Double Displacement: White precipitate (BaSO₄) forms instantly

⚠️ Safety

  • Adding water to quicklime (CaO) is strongly exothermic — it spits and steams; add water slowly and keep your face away.
  • Heating ferrous sulphate releases choking SO₂ / SO₃ gases — work in a fume cupboard and point the tube mouth away from everyone.
  • Barium chloride and its solutions are toxic if swallowed; wash hands after use and collect the barium waste separately.
  • Handle hot apparatus with a holder; wear goggles for every reaction.
  • Never taste or directly sniff the chemicals — waft gases gently if a smell is needed.
